GMAX crops are a chance mutation of four seasonal farmland crops — Spring Pineapple, Summer Watermelon, Autumn Pumpkin, Winter Winter Melon — not a separate seed type. Reach Junior Farmer, buy nine matching in-season seeds, plant them as one continuous, fully watered 3×3 block, and keep it weed-free until every plant matures. The mutation roll happens when the last plant in the block finishes; if it hits, the nine merge into one giant crop you chop with an axe instead of picking. Gmax Fertilizer is optional — it raises the odds and does not stack within a 3×3. Never harvest part of a block early. A successful chop drops regular produce, a Fragment (the Intermediate Farmer trial item and fruit-furniture material), a Giant decoration, and rarely a Golden version.

The 3×3 Method, Step by Step
- Reach Junior Farmer so Pineapple, Watermelon, Pumpkin, and Winter Melon seeds appear at the Happiness Seed Shop register.
- Buy at least nine seeds of the crop that is in season: Pineapple in Spring, Watermelon in Summer, Pumpkin in Autumn, Winter Melon in Winter.
- Till a continuous 3×3 of farmland. Larger merged fields create overlapping 3×3s, which means more rolls per planting cycle — wiki.gg counts a lone 3×3 as 1 chance, a 3×6 as 4, and a 6×6 as 16.
- Plant all nine matching seeds, water every tile, and remove weeds (rabbits or a Weed Barrier work too) so growth is not staggered. If weeds desync the block, the plants may not finish together.
- Optionally apply one Gmax Fertilizer to a single tile in each 3×3 — the center is the usual pick. Extra bags on the same block do not stack.
- Do not harvest anything until the last plant matures. The roll happens at that moment.
- If the block stays as nine normal plants, see the reroll note in Troubleshooting below.
- If it mutates, stand near the top of the giant crop — Screen Hype notes the prompt only appears up there — and chop it with an axe-type tool (Prima Games says hatchet; treat these as the same chopping tool family).
Seasonal GMAX Crops
All four grow on Farmland, take 4 days, harvest once, and unlock at Junior Farmer:
| Season | Crop | GMAX drops (wiki.gg) |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Pineapple | Pineapple, Pineapple Fragment, Giant Pineapple, Golden Pineapple (rare) |
| Summer | Watermelon | Watermelon, Watermelon Fragment, Giant Watermelon, Golden Watermelon (rare) |
| Autumn | Pumpkin | Pumpkin, Pumpkin Fragment, Giant Pumpkin, Golden Pumpkin (rare) |
| Winter | Winter Melon | Winter Melon, Winter Melon Fragment, Giant Winter Melon, Golden Winter Melon (rare) |
Gmax Fertilizer: Optional, One Per 3×3
Fertilizer is a chance boost, not a requirement:
- Gmax Fertilizer III is sold at the Happiness Seed Shop once you reach Intermediate Farmer (wiki.gg and GameRant both list 320g for five bags) or crafted at Fertilizer Box III from Poop, Primorite Ore, and Honey. Higher tiers come from later Fertilizer Box recipes.
- Apply it to one tile per 3×3 — the item text and wiki.gg agree it does not stack when fertilizing multiple crops in the same block.
- Players report GMAX results with no fertilizer at all, especially on large fields where many overlapping 3×3s roll as each plant finishes.
Harvest and Drops
A successful GMAX block merges into one giant plant that must be chopped with an axe-type tool — it cannot be picked like a normal crop. Chopping it can produce:
- Regular produce of that crop,
- a matching Fragment (Pineapple / Watermelon / Pumpkin / Winter Melon),
- a Giant decoration item,
- and rarely a Golden version of the fruit.
The exact counts per chop are not documented anywhere — sources only name the drop types. Fragments are CropKing collectibles spent on fruit-themed furniture blueprints at Lex Woodworks, and the Islandpedia stamp list confirms Giant, Golden, and Fragment entries all come from the matching GMAX crop.
For the Intermediate Farmer trial, Prima Games' quest text accepts any one of the four Season Crop Fragments, whichever is in season — one guide mentions a Pumpkin Fragment only because that author grew pumpkin, and claims that the first trial GMAX is guaranteed are contradicted by other players.
Troubleshooting
- Nothing merged. The most common cause is harvesting part of the block early or weeds staggering growth so the plants did not finish together. Replant and keep the whole block watered and clean.
- The block finished but stayed normal. That is expected — it is a chance roll.
- Gathering robots harvested my GMAX block early. Multiple players report gathering robots can pick a maturing block before the roll and skip the extra drops a manual harvest gives. Keep robots away from GMAX fields.
- Do bees or sprinklers change the odds? Unknown — player reports conflict, so treat them as growth-speed tools only.
